After WWII, designers began thinking about a real military transport plane, designed for the job, instead of using a small Dakota DC-3. Finally, in 1954, the C-130 Hercules flew, changing the way military tactical transport planes are being made. From that point on, most military transport planes have followed the same basic idea, large unobstructed hold, ramp doors, and pressurized cabins. The Russians and the Americans now have a variety of transports, ranging from large, long-distance transports (An-22, An-124, C-5, C-17) to all-purpose transports (C-130, Il-76). Tactical transport aircraft now play an important role in overseas military conflicts.
